That was the last thing either of them said for the next few minutes. They simply held each other in silence. Was it enough? Was everything they'd gone through worth giving up the chance of a child? She didn't know...she couldn't think about it. She couldn't think. All she felt was the pain. This was as close as they'd ever been in their six years together, but she still felt alone. As she said, it was her last chance... "Mulder," Scully finally broke the silence. She pulled away from the hug and rested her forehead against his. She took a deep breath, and tried to control her breathing from turning into gasping. Mulder put both hands on her upper arms. The squeeze she felt was just enough to send a warm surge through her heart. He told her to calm down, breathe, and have faith all in one simple touch. But that was the beauty of their relationship. They had always been so much more than friends, but they had never crossed that line. Mulder and Scully would tell each other more in one glance than other partners spent their whole careers talking about. It was hard for other people to understand. But that didn't matter because the majority of their time was spent in the field, in a basement room of the Hoover building, or recovering at home from whatever various obstacles their current X-Files case had thrown at them. Not in the company of other people. Whatever life she had had before meeting the FBI's infamous fallen-from-grace profiler, Scully had quickly abandoned. Yet she was still in the same place before her mind had wandered off. Scared. Wondering. And lonely. "Yeah?" he whispered in reply. She leaned her head back from his forehead, and the two of them shared a knowing, sad gaze. So many things were unspoken in their relationship. And he knew that he was lucky because every other woman he had ever known would have demanded verbal communication. But it wasn't like that. These two didn't need that. Scully tilted her head to the right. She continued to look at him, but it was not hard to see that she was holding back more tears. Except, unlike their hug in that hospital hallway years ago, she wasn't holding back that Scully grin he rarely saw. Mulder placed his right hand on her cheek. However, he did not push her to speak or even move. He knew she would take her time as she needed. As he moved his hand down so that his fingers rested on the nape of her neck, Scully stood up on her toes and place a kiss on his left cheek. A thank you, not only for what he had said to comfort her, but for everything else he had given her-strength, faith, belief, and a chance for the baby she had always wanted. Scully leaned back again and stared at her partner and best friend. As she contemplated their relationship, she realized just everything that they had actually been through. Sure, she knew. But this was her FBI partner. Her coworkers had partners, too, yet their duties certainly had never extended into becoming the father of their partner's child. She was lucky. This she knew. And it felt like everything hurt. Her body ached, but this wasn't due to the scary monsters or serial killers they chased. This was from the life she had chased, and lost...somewhere in the darkness. Scully would not give up her faith, though. However, she realized that this faith had more to do with the man in front of her, than the gold cross that hung from her neck. Scully had no idea that in a year, Mulder and her cross would leave her and that miracle in the time when she most needed her faith. But that wasn't now. And she would only need to handle what was in front of her right now. And Scully knew that she couldn't handle anything more than she was already dealing with. She loved Mulder. And she knew that Mulder loved her...but that love had grown into so much more. It was then that Scully replaced the kiss on Mulder's cheek with a kiss on his lips. "Scully." But the look on her face was enough to let him know that this is what she wanted. That there was nowhere else to go. This is where their lives led them. Nothing else could happen. No one else could interfere. Destiny? She didn't dare think so, but maybe, looking at the man she loved, she could concede a little bit, realizing just how perfect they really were.
