"Mulder?" "Huh, Scully?" he seemed to snap out of his reverie She looked across at her partner sitting in the passenger seat of the car. It was dark and just after the new Millennium. She could only catch glimpses of his face as they passed under street lamps. He appeared to be deep in thought. If she was going to have this conversation she wanted it to be in the car where shadows covered faces, eyes were not met, and she could be distracted by driving if she needed a break from the conversation. She looked at him with raised eyebrows "Are we going to talk about what happened at the hospital?" "WhaT happened at the hospital?" he countered with a smirk on his face "Mulder" she sighed. He knew exactly what she was talking about. "The kiss?" "It's New Years Scully. If I can't at least get a kiss on New Years then my life is more pathetic than I had previously thought" he grimaced shifting uncomfortably in his seat "Why now Mulder?" she ventured to ask knowing full well the answer. She had known for quite some time that there was an attraction between them. It was recently however, that she had felt heat coming off him every time they were near. He touched her more, stood ever more closely, and breathed her in whenever he was near. It was almost as if he knew the heat was there too and he was intoxicated by it, like she was. For she never felt the urge to back away. "Do you really want to get into this Scully? Because I welcome this conversation but..." he paused to look out the window, unable to face her "I'm not sure you do" There was a sadness in his words and that was not lost on her. "It was just a little unexpected" she countered. Knowing she was wading into uncomfortable territory. "So, you are telling me that you never expected to kiss me, ever? That on some unconscious level you had not thought of the possibility?" He was looking at her now. His face tangled with anger. "Stop psychoanalyzing me Mulder. This is not the way I wanted this conversation to go" Her words were biting. More biting than intended. "Oh, I forgot. That's right, you call the shots. Go ahead, Scully. Tell me the direction you want this conversation to go. How about we start with 'Mulder, don't ever do that again'. Or, 'Mulder, we can't have that type of relationship'. Or, 'Mulder you are my best friend but...'. How are my navigational abulities? Am I now headed in the right direction?" He turned from her again suddenly fascinated with the drizzle falling outside his window as he ran a finger along the ledge. They were stopped at a red light and she looked down at her lap twisting her two gloved hands together. She was now really unhappy with the direction of this conversation. If she didn't do or say something drastic all would be lost and possibly worse than it had been before. "It was so chaste." she started slowly, still looking down "I guess I just expected more passion" Clueing into her words Mulder turned his head. There was a look of confusion and surprise on his features that Scully caught out of the corner of her eye. She continued while slowly raising her eyes to meet his "Mulder, after all our years together, everything we've been though, and knowing how we feel about each other, I guess I just thought our first kiss..." A horn blasted from behind them. Apparently the light had turned green and all the New Years revelers did not want to be held up in Georgetown. Scully immediately jumped and grabbed the wheel hitting the gas. The car fishtailed a little on the black ice. After gaining control she glanced in his direction and noticed his body had not moved. He was suspended in the middle of her last thought, waiting for her to continue her sentence. Not wanting to move until she did. "I'm sorry Mulder. I guess I just lost track of the light." He reached over a put his one good arm on the back of her seat not saying a word. She knew he expected her to continue. "So," she shifted uncomfotably in her seat "as I said, it was very innocent. But, we were in a hospital and on a case..." she didn't really know where she was now going with her words. Everything that came out of her mouth seemed wrong so she just stopped talking. She pulled up in front of her building and shut off the engine. He still had not said anything. That stupid horn had de-railed her words. What came out of her mouth had not really been what she wanted to say but now it was done. She unbuckled her belt and got out of the car. He followed suit. "Mulder, I am still not sure you should be driving with that sling on your arm and the meds they gave you. Maybe I should drive you home" she tried to sound very business-like yet caring. She hoped he didn't hear her heart pounding in her chest. He still had not said a word and that was making her heart pound even stronger. She passed him the keys as they crossed in front of the car. Their hands briefly touched and she dared not look into his eyes. She was kicking herself as she walked to the sidewalk and he started for the driver's door. She knew again, she needed to do or say something or this moment would be lost. "Mulder," she said, her voice louder than she had intended. Immediately quieting herself, so as not to sound too anxious, she continued "why don't you come up and have a drink? Celebrate the new year?" "Sure, Scully." he replied rather slowly "that would be nice." His voice was hesitant, unsure of what she wanted from him or them. He stood still at the open door and she knew he was questioning her intent. Seize the moment she chided herself. With a small almost imperceptible grin on her face she added "maybe I'll even make you breakfast in the morning" she turned on the last word and walked quickly toward her building not wanting to feel the pain of rejection if he turned her down and drove off in the car. As she came to her building's front door she heard the car door slam shut but no engine noise. She could not, would not, turn around. Pausing to wait for his footsteps she opened the door and he held it for her. He walked behind her down the hall to her apartment. As she unlocked the door he came up closely behind her. While wrapping his one good hand around to the front of her waist and pulling her even closer to him he leaned down and whispered softly in her ear "Scully, are you sure you want to do this?" She opened the door with a pop and looking down turned to face him within his embrace. Raising her head to look into his eyes she breathed in the heat coming off his body. "I know I want you" He leaned down and kissed her slowly and passionately pulling her softly into his embrace. She slid her hands around his neck, his hair, his back tugging him lower and deeper into their kiss. The kiss deepened and tongues played with each other as their hips moved in unison and he danced her slowly into her apartment. His one good hand was securely wrapped around the back of her waist and she was shedding him of his coat. They had still not broken the kiss as he hooked the door with his foot and clicked it shut. This was the kiss Scully had been thinking about. ****************************************** *****************
